'mommy i am hungry! can you give me saadam?' ( read this in the following way " ma-me-ee i M hung-zhy{the roll of the R} ! ke-aan you give me sa-dum) .. nope i am not taking foolish classes but this is precisely how my 6 year old cousin sister spoke and trust me i literally jumped out my seat and ran for my life! let me tell you that kid's backgorund - she is 6 , studies in a good school in the city, has well educated parents and has ALWAYS been in chennai and not even by mistake has she stepped out of the country to get such an accent.
Then why such an accent where every 'r' is rolled and every syllable is STRECHED ? see i agree that we have to make our children speak english but that is only because it is a worldwide language. does that mean that your kid doesnt know to speak one line in your mother tongue without rolling thr 'ra' even there? No right. then why? why do parents make their children speak a language thats not theirs. I am not saying dont speak english at all but speak english when required. at the age of 5 or 6 if you speak this way then when you grow up... god save the others!
the other day i was at a famous fast food joint with my mother and we were sitting behind this table which had a family of 3 . the kidin that family, - a girl say of 7 or 8 ran towards a huge mirror there and looked into it ( imagine this with the innocence of an 8 year old) after a mintue she half-shouts( still looking into the mirror) " mommy look at me here in the mirror . Here!here!"(all with the so called american accent) . My mother and i watch the kid for a few minutes and return to our plates then my mom looks up at me and says " all because of the IT boom" WHAT?????
Is IT responsible for the drastic way in which we talk??? how stupid! i understand the need for unversal english but that uprooting our culture is a complete no-no for me!
i too belong to the same generation of rolling r's cos i too break into insane profane words which are technically NOT a part of my culture, well that i feel is cos i cant go around swearing in tamil and hindi always... i know thats no justification but the way these kids are growing up... PHEW! gees gawd save ya mate ! ;)
